The weather is getting cooler and I am reaching for my sweaters, boots, coats and scarves. Sweater Weather is here.
And, you know what usually comes along with sweater weather, right? The ick…the tickle in our throats, or the bark that won’t seem to quit. It’s that time of the year that all mom’s dread. It’s the beginning of the never-ending cycle of sickness that comes with the cold and kids in school. Are you in the ick cycle already? Have your kids already missed days at school?
It doesn’t have to be like this. The first few years my kids were in school they were sick ALL THE TIME. Like, all the time. Endless days home from preschool, doctor visits, and scripts. It was ridiculous.
When I look back on that time, I wish that I knew all I know now. When I got interested in natural living, it all changed. My kids are going into their fourth month of school right now, and they haven’t missed a day. And, actually, I can’t remember when they missed a day of school going back into last year.
I’m not a doctor by any means, but my own little family will joke with me and call me “their witch doctor” and I’m ok with that. I enjoy it. I love empowering them to listen to their bodies, know when something seems off, and reach first for a holistic, natural alternative before rushing into thinking that they need medicine.
Here is my pretty fool-proof plan to keep us up on our wellness game this year. Some are DIY’s but seriously so simple, there is NO STRESS in them. I promise. If they’re not simple I won’t do them. Ha!
Sweater Weather Wellness Guide:
★ Thieves Tea: I drink this 2-3 times a day when I feel yucky or I’ve been around people who are feeling yucky. When I travel, I always carry oils with me and I make sure to drink this after a flight because planes are seriously gross. I also make this for my kiddos when they tell me they feel off.
How do you make it? Great question, it’s super easy!
Add a spoonful of raw, local honey, 1 drop Thieves Vitality, and 2-3 drops Lemon Vitality to a mug of hot water. Stir and sip!
Thieves tea hack: Have a favorite tea? Or don’t have time to make your own? Put a drop of Thieves on the bottom of your mug and pour your favorite tea over it and add honey and lemon. Done.

*Remember you can’t have one cup of tea and expect a miracle. Be consistent. Have a cup in the morning and at night and keep doing it until you start to feel relief.
★ Chest Rub: This is by far one of the easiest and my favorite DIYs. I was just using it on my kiddos this week.
¼ organic coconut oil
30 drops of RC Essential Oil
10 drops Peppermint
Put the coconut oil in a pot and melt. Pour it in a glass container. Let it cool slightly, but not so much it hardens. Put in your essential oils. Stir slightly. Put the lid on your container and throw in the fridge for a few hours to cool and harden.
Kid comes home with a bark or they’re so stuffy, this chest rub to the rescue. Rub on chest and back…get some rest. I use this for all of us. I know everything that is in it (all three ingredients) and it’s so much better than those conventional ones that have all types of other crud in them. Trust me.
★ Epsom Salt Bath: Most of us know about the importance of iron and calcium for our bodies, but what about magnesium? It is the second most abundant element in human cells and the fourth most important positively charged ion in the body. It helps the body regulate over 325 enzymes! Epsom salt is rich in both magnesium and sulfate. When you soak in a bath with oils and Epsom salts it will help detoxify the body of all the cooties and unwanted guests!
Making your own oil infused bath salts is easy and you can customize them depending on what your needs are. When starting out with oils, it’s always best to start slow. If you are new to oils, use 1 drop each, you can always add more if you feel the need. You know your body, listen to what it tells you!
Detox Cootie Bath
1 cup Epsom salt, Thieves, Lemon, Purification.
I make mine ahead of time and sometimes I even add some dried rose petals if I want to be fancy. I love to gift them because who doesn’t want the gift of wellness. (Hint: They are the perfect little gifts for the holiday season.)
★ Diffusing: It’s no surprise that I am totally obsessed with our diffusers. There is a diffuser going in our house 24/7. I put it on as soon as we wake up in the morning and keep it going all day, changing up the oils depending on our needs throughout the day. For me, diffusers are life.
A diffuser has a well for water that you add a few drops of essential oil to. I recommend starting with 2-3 drops of your desired essential oil. The water molecules and essential oil molecules are then diffused into the air in the room–cleaning and purifying the air. They act like a humidifier by adding moisture into the air.
A Fun Fact: In our brains, there is a part called the Limbic System, which is referred to as “the emotional brain.” Within the limbic system is something called the amygdala, which is where we PROCESS and store our emotions. Of our 5 senses, SMELL is the only one that activates the limbic system where our amygdala lives! And you know what all-natural substances have great smells? Essential oils, of course! We can diffuse or breathe in oils to process our emotions in a healthy way. Get those diffusers going! Fill the room with positive, happy, relaxing scents and so much more!
I use Young Living diffusers because they are made with a special plastic that is able to withstand YL oils, awesome! Other diffusers can’t handle them, and the oils will break down the plastic and then you’ll breathe in toxins. Gross! So yeah that diffuser you got from that mainstream store or the one you ordered off that website where you get free next day shipping, you’ll probably want to just put that away!

What I throw in the diffuser when someone isn’t feeling so hot:
Immunity Booster: 2 drops Thieves, 2 drops Lemon, 1 drop Purification
Respiratory Comfort: 2 drops RC, 2 drops Lemon, 1 drop Purification
★ Thieves Hand Soap: Thieves is the spotlight oil in all the Young Living Products to stay well. I was just going over pathogens with my son for his health homework. It is so simple, that washing your hands helps keep them away.
The problem with today is many people are washing their hands with products that kill all bacteria, even the good bacteria we need!
And as a side note, who likes or wants chemicals in their hand soap.
I use Thieves Foaming Hand Soap in our house. Especially in the fall into winter months when kids are in school and the germs are more easily shared. Thieves foaming hand soap will cleanse and defend your skin thanks to the essential oil blend. With pure orange and lemon essential oils, ginkgo biloba and vitamin E, it contains gentle ingredients, so it can be used often without drying your skin. (HACK: after your Thieves Foaming Hand Soap container is empty, fill it with water, add 1 tbsp plain Dr. Bronner’s castile soap, 1 tsp-1tbsp sweet almond oil (or whatever carrier you choose), and 10 drops Thieves essential oil. Put the top on, shake, and DONE!)
