OK, it’s November and stuff is about to get real. The holidays are upon us and with all the impending hustle and bustle and spreading holiday cheer, my house isn’t looking so hot. I am type A so when the house starts to look like a bomb went off inside it, I start to panic. I have the kids’ papers from school piling up, with the million and one holiday catalogs that seem to come each year. The pile game here is strong—and I can’t stand piles!
I love to have guests over the holiday season. That includes holiday gatherings, cookie night, girl night, and a casual dinner party here and there. So, piles need to vacate the area. But, it isn’t just the piles, sometimes all the straightening up and cleaning up after those functions turns me into a full-blown Grinch. So, I wanted to share some of my favorite tips to get your home in order, keep it a safe sanctuary for your family, and keep yourself sane in the process.
If you follow me on Instagram, you will see that I read the book The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo. If you haven’t read it, you need to—but do it with an open mind and use the book as you see fit in your life, because it’s hard-core organizing. In this post though, I want to tell you one of the ways that I keep our home a safe and peaceful haven for our family. (I mean as peaceful as it can be with young children.)
I will completely disclose that after reading the book above, I Kondo-ed out and donated 8 big, piled to the tipsy top bags of stuff that was ready to go and find a new home. —And that wasn’t even half of the house. I want to get the rest done before Christmas, because under that tree will be a ton more “stuff” that I need to find homes for! I know all moms can relate. This totally helped me take control of the piles, too.
So aside from de-cluttering, something that is important to me as I clean my house from all the fun and visitors, is using products that are chemical free. Because when my kids grab that Christmas cookie they dropped off the floor and stuff it in their little mouths, I want to feel as good as I can about that.
Society is coming around to understand that so much of what we are constantly exposing ourselves to is crap. You don’t need to be considered a hippie or a health food junkie to understand that living a cleaner footprint is better for us all. Does it sound overwhelming? Well, heck yeah, but that is why I am here to help.
Of all health changes to make, this is THE TOP change I recommend: Kick “Fragrance” to the curb!!!
When you see ‘fragrance’ on personal-care product labels, just read it as ‘hidden chemicals.’ Read my post here to learn a little more about this.
Why should you care?
Many ingredients in “Fragrances” are KNOWN carcinogens (linked to cancer), as well as endocrine and reproductive disrupters. This kind of deception makes me so angry and sad for the millions of men and women who *think* that they are buying safe, “clean” products for their household.
Enter the Thieves line. Thieves essential oil is a powerful combination of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary essential oils. At first, I was skeptical to try it because I am a clean freak, and I wanted to make sure that it would work the way the conventional products did. I was floored when I started using the products, not only did they work just as well; they worked better. They smelled great and get this, they support your immune system as you are whistling while you work. They are plant-based, so you are not breathing in toxic chemicals that make your nose and throat burn as you are using them.
I was sold. Plant power!
There is a whole spectrum of Thieves products from Young Living. From toothpaste, to hand purifier, to an amazing all-purpose cleaner, it’s easily one of the most popular oils for this reason.
Here are a few favorite products from the Thieves line up that are front and center in my house for the holidays:
Thieves Household Cleaner: Formulated with the power of Young Living’s Thieves oil blend, you can get a deep clean without dangerous or synthetic ingredients. Thieves cleaner also includes the scent of Lemon essential oil for an even more uplifting aroma. This all-purpose cleaner can be used on any surface in your home for dusting, spot cleaning, scrubbing, or any other cleaning need. This one bottle does it all and since it is a concentrate, this 14.4 fl. oz. bottle lasts forever. You only need to place a cap-ful in your spray bottle and fill the rest up with filtered or distilled water. That is it. Under my sink has never looked so good, since I use this one bottle for everything. Talk about my de-cluttering game going strong!
Thieves Foaming Hand Soap: Thieves foaming hand soap will cleanse and defend your skin thanks to the essential oil blend. With pure orange and lemon essential oils, ginkgo biloba and vitamin E, it contains gentle ingredients so it can be used often without drying your skin.
Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier: Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier is all-natural and designed to cleanse and refresh your hands. It can be used by children and adults alike to keep hands clean and promote good hygiene, without the use of water. I have these everywhere!
Thieves Spray: Thieves Spray is ideal to use whenever you must touch something: door handles, toilet seats, shopping carts. It’s powerful enough to protect us from dust, mold, and nasty little micro-organisms. It is ideal for traveling or keeping in your purse or backpack.
Thieves Dish Soap: With naturally derived ingredients, this soap effectively cleans your dishes without chemicals, dyes, or synthetics. Young Living’s pure essential oils—Thieves, Jade Lemon, and Bergamot—work with other plant-based ingredients to leave your dishes clean.
Thieves Wipes: I use these to wipe surfaces in the bathroom and kitchen in a pinch. If I am doing just a quick clean up these are super handy.
My absolute favorite Thieves product.
Using these products, I know that my house is clean and green.
It feels so good to be able to keep our home clean and safe, not only around the holidays, but every single day of the year. You know the song, “If Every Day was Christmas”—it can be. I love that our home is non-toxic for ourselves and the kiddos. I hope that this post helps you think about what you let into your home, and maybe it gives you a starting point to switch your products over to a healthier way of life, now and after the holidays!
