A little while back, I found a nail polish brand that intrigued me. I have tried the whole not painting my nails in pursuit of a cleaner lifestyle, and it didn’t work for me.
What I found?
I really enjoy painting my nails. The reason I stopped was because the average nail polish contains a ton of nasty chemicals that get into our bodies and can be carcinogenic, as well as endocrine disrupting. Chemicals such as formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl phthalate, can wreak havoc on your system.
But, I realized that painting my nails was a girlie, glamorous habit that I delighted in. So, for a while I thought if I use it sparingly, I can control all the other products that I am using, so it’s OK.
Sounds good, right?
But then every time I was using nail polish, I had this nagging feeling and the little voice in my head was saying, “You know this isn’t good for you.”
Back to the drawing board to do more research.
As I was researching, I saw despite how many women heavily use nail care products, industrial chemicals in cosmetics are largely unregulated in the US. I read that of the 10,000 chemicals used in personal care products, only about 10% have been assessed for safety.
So, I started looking around for a company that at the very least was 5 Free of the top chemicals. Then I bumped into an Australian brand of nail polish called Sienna Byron Bay.
Not only was their packaging super cute, with a distinctive shaped bottle and wooden caps that caught my eye right away, but it was also 7 FREE. Bonus. This means that their brand leaves out formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, synthetic camphor, formaldehyde resin, xylene and tosylamide. Plus, it is vegan and cruelty free. I was impressed. Searching through their website, it says,
“Being in harmony with the environment and our surroundings is a pillar of the Sienna lifestyle. We strive to be as eco-friendly as possible with the start-to-finish of our production based in Australia to keep our carbon footprint low. All the components of our products are vegan and cruelty free- we source only the finest non-animal ingredients. Sienna nail polishes have the cleanest conventional formula on the market with none of the typical toxic chemicals found in many other polishes. The formula used is a healthy and clean alternative, a strong value for the Sienna brand. Our nail polish remover is made from soy and 100% renewable sources.”
I was convinced, so I ordered some to try. In the past, I noticed that natural types of nail polishes didn’t last long and chipped often. Many times, their consistency was different then their conventional friends.
I ordered my first two nail polishes from The Organic Bunny Shop. They came in and I was hoping for the best.
- I opened the beautiful bottle and checked out the consistency. Check. It wasn’t clumpy or bumpy like some others I have tried.
- I prepped my nails and went to put it on. It was not streaky and two coats did the job. Check. It was smooth and went on smoothly.
- Other nail polishes in this category looked a little matte, and I am all about my nails having a little shine. Check. It was there; it was shiny.
Then I thought, “it probably won’t last long.” I am happy to be wrong. It lasted a whole week before even noticing a little chip.
Since then I have used it repeatedly with the same results. My favorite color is Peace, which is a light pink that is translucent. It has a sheer finish. I love a good clean, natural looking nail so this is my go-to.
The other color I have is Sienna. This is a deep brown with plum tones. I thought it would be pretty for the upcoming holidays.
I have plans to try out the colors winter and shadow next. Also, check out their online shop as they have so many different options to choose from, including a shimmer and metallic line.
Talk about a great stocking stuffer for all the women in your life!
These polishes are not 100% clean, because nail polish is always going to have paint-like ingredients, but in moderation they are the best I have tried to date.
